Matthias Schmalisch

Matthias Schmalisch has an extensive work experience in the field of biology and biochemistry. From 2005 to 2009, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, where they discovered novel small RNAs and ORFs in the genome of Bacillus subtilis. Matthias was also a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Goettingen, where they studied the influence of different carbohydrates on the expression of genes from central metabolic pathways. From 2009 to 2012, they worked as a Scientist and Senior Scientist at Gevo, where they focused on building a fundamental understanding of the metabolic processes in Gevo's biocatalyst to optimize isobutanol production. From 2012 to 2015, they were Associate Director, Fermentation and Microbial Physiology at Intrexon Corporation, where they directed a fermentation team and worked on strain characterization, media optimization, and process development for various projects. From 2020 to 2022, they were Director, Discovery Biology at NotCo, and from 2022 to present, they are R&D Director at Formo.

Matthias Schmalisch obtained their Ph.D. in Microbiology and Molecular Biology from FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2004, after completing their Diploma in Biology from the same institution between 1996 and 2001.
