Employee Experience Manager at Fiveable

Located between LA and SF. 1 dog, 1 wife. Likes: people, dogs, food, sun. Dislikes: sucky people, cats, lack of food, rain.

Love taking care of people and the operations/procedures that live behind those efforts. Always looking at how to optimize, but with a priority in how people are doing + engagement data over pure speed and efficiency.

Qualities I value in my colleagues

  • Honesty
  • sense of humor
  • reliability
  • loyalty
  • adaptability

I think a reliable, hard-working, and willing teammate is more pleasant to work with than one who might be extremely talented but lacking in those sort of "soft-skills" above. Maybe that's why I'm in the People + Culture department, but I'm a believer that talent can be taught (to a degree), while these traits are harder to learn.

My communication style

  • Casual
  • open
  • transparent
  • genuine
  • overcommunicative

I love getting DM's and notifications (weird) and always gear to start a meeting just talking about life and how things are going. I also try to make sure that nothing or no one gets left out, so I tend to over communicate and write everything down so that everything gets captured.

My pet peeves

  • Arrogance
  • unreliability
  • ungratefulness
  • close-mindedness
  • impatience

My biggest pet peeve is the phrase "it's not in my job description" - I love when teammates are open and willing to help where they can, and there are always ways to direct people in the right direction or provide feedback or encouragement where needed. I also love when people are thankful for each other and aware of the unique positions that they are in, and how much it can impact those around them simply by just being aware of each other.

Fun fact

Covid opened up a whole new section of me that I never knew - I have become an avid cook throughout the pandemic. Korean, Mexican, Greek/Pizzas, and grilled foods have been my go to 👨🏻‍🍳

Personal Q&A

  • Can you describe a typical day of yours?

Wake up early (regular people early, not like 4am early), take my dog potty, get some espresso shots ready for my wife and I to make our drinks of choice, and then the early morning is when I am most productive with solo-projects - heads down, data/writing heavy tasks. Usually get some type of exercise in during the late morning, and then I typically eat lunch while responding to any emails and DM's. Rest of the day is dedicated to synchronous meetings and collaborative work, and I try to get as much done before 3pm as possible, since that's when Umbee gets home from work, which means the dog gets excited, she wants to talk about her day, chores start getting assigned, etc.... so productivity for the rest of the late afternoon tanks 😂
