Medical Science Liaison at Fennec Pharmaceuticals

Katie Caton, DNP, NP-C, ACHPN has a diverse and extensive work experience in the healthcare industry. Katie has worked in various roles and settings, focusing primarily on oncology and palliative care.

From 2022, Katie is currently employed as a Medical Science Liaison at Fennec Pharmaceuticals Inc. Prior to this, they worked as a Community Medical Liaison at Syneos Health/GlaxoSmithKline starting in 2021.

In 2020, Katie served as the APP Lead for Supportive Care Services at Sentara Brock Cancer Center, where they played an instrumental role in developing an outpatient palliative care program. Katie also spearheaded the development of telehealth and home-based palliative care programs for oncology patients.

Before their work at Sentara Brock Cancer Center, Katie worked as a Nurse Practitioner at Virginia Oncology Associates from 2018 to 2020. During this time, they independently assessed and implemented evidence-based treatment regimens for chemotherapy patients, both in the neoadjuvant and adjuvant setting.

In 2016, Katie joined Chesapeake Regional Healthcare as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. Katie was recruited by leadership to serve on the Oncology Committee as a representative for Palliative Care. Katie incorporated the use of the Edmonton Symptom Assessment System (ESAS) to improve symptom management and patient outcomes.

From 2015 to 2016, Katie held the position of Director/Program Developer of the Outpatient Palliative Care Program at Virginia Oncology Associates. Katie ensured that quality measures aligned with national palliative care standards and collaborated with a large hospital system to participate in a joint venture pilot study.

Prior to their work at Virginia Oncology Associates, Katie was a Nurse Practitioner at Texas Oncology from 2014 to 2015. During their time there, they were invited to assist in developing a pilot palliative care program for oncology patients. Katie independently assessed and implemented evidenced-based chemotherapy regimens and provided advance care planning and hospice discussions.

From 2012 to 2014, Katie was the Director/Program Developer of the Outpatient Palliative Care Program at Virginia Oncology Associates. Katie successfully launched the program, which provided services to approximately 12,000 patients. Katie strategically developed a business plan that aligned with national palliative care standards and presented proposals for program growth to key stakeholders and decision-makers.

In 2011, Katie was involved in the development of a new inpatient Palliative Care Program at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital while working as a Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner. Katie actively participated in nursing education on palliative care and served on the Sentara Cancer Committee.

Katie's career in healthcare began in 2006 at Virginia Oncology Associates, where they worked as a Medical/Gynecology Oncology Nurse Practitioner. Katie implemented treatment regimens, reviewed imaging studies, and assisted in gynecological-oncological procedures.

Katie Caton, DNP, NP-C, ACHPN obtained their Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Agriculture/Chemistry from Ferrum College in 1997. Katie then attended Old Dominion University, where they completed their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2002. Katie further pursued their education at Old Dominion University and obtained a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) in 2005. Continuing their academic journey, they earned a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) in Nursing Practice from Old Dominion University, graduating in 2012.

In addition to their extensive educational background, Katie Caton also holds various certifications. Katie achieved the Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (ACHPN) certification in December 2012. Furthermore, they are a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Practitioner licensed in the state of Virginia.
