Tom MacTavish

Chief Design Officer at entigenlogic

Tom MacTavish has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Tom began their career as a Software Development Manager at NCR, where they led the development of non-stop transaction processing systems for bar code-based point of sale systems. Tom later became Director of Engineering, leading a team that invented WaveLan, one of the first 802.11 local area networks. Tom then joined Motorola as Vice President and Director of the Human Interaction Research Center of Excellence, where they spearheaded the development of various technologies for embedded systems, such as automatic speech recognition and image understanding applications. Tom also founded their own consulting firm, Interaction Design Strategies, LLC, focused on designing next-generation experiences for interactive products. Tom later became an Assistant Professor at the IIT Institute of Design, teaching courses in Interaction Design and conducting workshops on User Experience Design. Most recently, they served as the Chief Design Officer at entigenlogic. Overall, Tom MacTavish has extensive experience in user-centered design and interaction technologies in various leadership roles.

Tom MacTavish earned their Bachelor of Arts degree in English, with a minor in French, from Central Michigan University in 1974. Tom then pursued a Master of Arts degree in English at the University of Iowa from 1975 to 1976. Later, in 1977 and 1978, they attended the University of Michigan, where they earned a Master of Arts degree in Information Science.
