Matthew Mugherini serves as the Vice President & Associate General Counsel for Workplace Solutions at Empower, a role held since April 2015. In this capacity, Matthew leads a team of five legal counsel and specialists focused on Employee Benefits, providing guidance on ERISA and tax-related legal matters for Empower's retirement plan business, which manages approximately $1.4 trillion in assets under administration. Prior to this position, Matthew held several significant roles, including Assistant General Counsel at Empower, Senior Counsel at MassMutual Financial Group, and Assistant Vice President for Retirement Compliance at The Hartford. Matthew also has experience as Associate Director in the ERISA Regulatory Services Group at MFS Investment Management and as Retirement Plans Compliance Manager at Fidelity Investments. Matthew holds a Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Boston College.
