Derek Paulsen currently serves as the Dean of the College of Justice, Safety & Military Science at Eastern Kentucky University, a position held since August 2002, alongside their role as a Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice and Director of the Center for Crime and the Built Environment (CABE). Previous experience includes serving as Interim Dean and Associate Dean at the same college and as Commissioner of Planning, Preservation, and Development for Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government from February 2012 to January 2019. Prior to that, Paulsen was an Assistant Professor at Appalachian State University from August 2000 to May 2002. Educational qualifications include a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University, an M.A. in Police Administration from Eastern Kentucky University, and a B.A. in History/Archaeology from Florida State University.
