Mick Watson has extensive experience in data science, translational sciences, and computational biology. Mick is currently a Principal Scientist at dsm-firmenich, leading projects on microbiome data infrastructure, connected data, FAIR data, data science, AI, and machine learning. Previously, they worked at The Roslin Institute as a Personal Chair in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, where they led a research group focused on genomics, functional genomics, animal breeding, and microbiome data analytics. Mick also served as the Director of ARK-Genomics at The Roslin Institute, overseeing the genomics platform and collaborating with researchers worldwide. Prior to that, they held positions as the Head of Genetics and Genomics at The Roslin Institute, the Head of Bioinformatics at the Institute for Animal Health, and a Bioinformatics Scientist at Paradigm Therapeutics, Incyte Genomics, and GlaxoWellcome. Throughout their career, Mick Watson has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers in reputable scientific journals.
Mick Watson completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioinformatics and genomics at The University of Edinburgh from 2014 to 2015. Prior to that, they obtained a Master of Science (MSc) in Biological Computation from the University of York in 1996. Mick also holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biology from the University of York, which they earned from 1993 to 1996.
