Debbie Johnston has over 20 years of experience in various legal roles within the Canadian government. Debbie started as a Counsel and Prosecutor at the Department of Justice Canada in 1997, where they worked until 2009. Debbie then moved on to the Public Prosecution Service of Canada as a Senior Counsel until 2014. From 2014 to 2018, they served as Senior Counsel at the Office of the Commissioner of Canada Elections. In 2018, they became the General Counsel for Corporate Law Services at the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. Most recently, in 2020, they took on the role of Deputy Executive Director and General Counsel, and later Executive Director and Senior General Counsel, at the Competition Bureau Legal Services within the Department of Justice Canada. Throughout their career, they have demonstrated expertise in criminal law, ethics, human rights, and legal advisory roles.
Debbie Johnston holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in political science and French from Mount Allison University (1986-1990), an LLB & BCL from McGill University (1991-1995), and a Masters of Law in international human rights law & criminal law from the University of Ottawa (2006-2008).
