Johannes Smeets has extensive experience in international relations and finance, currently serving as the Netherlands Representative in the Council of Europe Development Bank since November 2020. Prior to this role, Johannes Smeets held a position as the Netherlands Representative at the Inter-American Development Bank from July 2012 to November 2020 and worked as an Advisor on governance, human rights, and peacebuilding at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August 2010 to June 2012. Johannes Smeets also has a long-standing career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, where retirement was noted starting August 2018. Academic credentials include a Doctorandus degree in International Economics obtained from Katholieke Hogeschool Tilburg between 1971 and 1979.
