Tom Malnar started their work experience as a Software Developer at L-3 Communications in 1999. Tom then worked as a Software Team Lead at ALT Software from 2004 to 2005. From 2006 to 2012, Tom served as a Senior Software Developer and Team Lead at Christie Digital Systems. In 2012, they joined Core Avionics & Industrial LLC (CoreAVI) as a Senior Software Developer and later became a Principal Software Developer. At CoreAVI, Tom worked on safety critical graphics and compute solutions for various markets, including automotive, unmanned vehicle, industrial IoT, and avionics systems.

Tom Malnar attended Conestoga College from 1996 to 1999, where they pursued a Telecommunications Technologist degree with a specialization in Electronics. Prior to that, from 1990 to 1994, they attended Resurrection Catholic Secondary, although no specific degree or field of study was mentioned for this period.
