Tom Fagan has a diverse work experience in the field of fire and emergency services. Tom started their career in 2000 as part of the Fire Department Operations Division in the City of Lee's Summit. In 2015, they joined the Center for Public Safety Excellence, serving as a Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) Peer Assessor. In this role, they played a critical role in validating agency compliance, creating accreditation recommendations, and advocating for process improvements across multiple states. In 2017, Tom became the Fire Division Chief of Administration for the City of Lawrence, where they focused on leading a team to ensure community safety and manage risks. Their responsibilities included financial oversight, policy improvements, public communications, fleet and facility management, worker's compensation and risk management, and accreditation management. As of 2022, Tom is currently serving as the Fire Chief for the City of Marion, Iowa.
Tom Fagan's education history includes a Master of Science (MS) in Management, Strategy, and Leadership from Michigan State University - Eli Broad College of Business. Tom also has a Certified Public Manager (CPM) certification from The University of Kansas, obtained from the School of Public Affairs and Administration. Additionally, they hold a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Human Resources from Ottawa University, and an Associate of Arts and Sciences (AAS) in Fire Science Technology from Metropolitan Community College-Blue River. Before their university education, Tom completed the Central Jackson County Paramedic Program for Paramedicine. Tom completed their high school education at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in 1998. Further certifications obtained by Tom include Chief Fire Officer (CFO) from the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and National Registered Paramedic from the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
