Asgeir Jonsson currently serves as the Governor of the Central Bank of Iceland, a position held since August 2019. Prior to this, Asgeir was the Head of the Department of Economics and Associate Professor at the University of Iceland, where responsibilities included teaching courses on Money, Banking, Financial Markets, International Finance, and Economic History, as well as chairing the Masters Program in Financial Economics. Asgeir's extensive career includes roles as Chief Economist at both Arion Bank and Kaupthing Bank, where leadership of economic research teams was essential for macroeconomic forecasting and investment analysis. Additional experience includes serving as an Economic Advisor at GAM Management and Virðing hf. Asgeir holds a PhD in Monetary Policy from Indiana University Bloomington and a Master's degree in Monetary Economics, International Finance, and Economic History from the same institution, complemented by a Bachelor of Science in Economics from Háskóli Íslands.
