Professor Urfan Khaliq is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Professor Khaliq is responsible for the overall management and leadership of the College. He plays a key role in setting the strategy and direction of the College and in promoting the development of learning and teaching and research excellence. As Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Khaliq is also a member of the University Executive Board.
Since joining Cardiff University in 1995, Professor Khaliq has held several senior positions, including Director of Research (Law), Head of Law, Director of Recruitment and Admissions in the School of Law and Politics and, most recently, as Head of School.
He qualified as an Advocate of the Punjab High Court, Pakistan in 2004, providing pro bono legal advice to street children in conflict with the law as well as helping with the training in international human rights law of the Pakistani judiciary and legal profession.
Professor Khaliq’s most recent publications include The Achievements of International Law: Essays in Honour of Robin Churchill, for which he acted both as contributor and editor, and Jurisdictional Exceptionalisms: Islamic Law, International Law and Parental Child Abduction, part of a ‘Law in Context’ series. He is currently working on a monograph on general principles of international law and a further book on the history of forced labour in international law.
He is a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
