Staff Software Engineer at Caption Health

Sam Lee, Ph.D. has a diverse work experience in various roles and companies. Sang-hyeb(Sam) is currently working as a Staff Software Engineer at Caption Health since November 2021. Prior to that, they worked as an R&D Software Consultant at QT Ultrasound LLC from February 2020 to November 2021.

Before joining QT Ultrasound LLC, Sam worked as a Senior Software Engineer at Magnetic Insight Inc from September 2019 to February 2020. During their time there, they optimized the performance of simulation code in Python and participated in a project to port the software package from Windows to NixOS (Linux).

Sam also has experience working at QT Ultrasound LLC as a Principal Software Engineer from March 2018 to May 2019. In this role, they designed and implemented breast density calculation software using unsupervised machine learning algorithms and optimized ultrasound transmission and reflection image reconstruction algorithms. Sang-hyeb(Sam) also implemented functionalities on the QT scanner to allow technicians to view and analyze DICOM images with different processing schemes. Prior to that, they worked as a Senior Software Engineer at QT Ultrasound LLC from June 2015 to February 2018, where they redesigned and implemented reflection image reconstruction software using C/C++/CUDA/pthread, significantly improving its speed and performance. Sang-hyeb(Sam) also improved data acquisition and motion control software for ultrasound medical imaging devices.

Sam's work experience also includes being a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from August 2014 to May 2015, where they co-invented motion correction techniques and designed and implemented a motion correction program for clinical PET imaging. Sang-hyeb(Sam) also optimized an existing phase-based gating program.

Sang-hyeb(Sam) has also worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from August 2011 to July 2014. Additionally, they worked as a Graduate Research Assistant at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from July 2013 to May 2015.

Sam has prior experience as a System Software Engineer at Samsung Thales Corporation from January 2009 to January 2011 and as an Information Management Officer at United States Forces Korea (USFK) from April 2006 to April 2008.

Sang-hyeb(Sam) began their career as a Lab Demonstrator at the University of Otago from September 2002 to July 2003.

Overall, Sam Lee, Ph.D. has extensive experience in software engineering, research, and teaching roles in both academic and industry settings.

Sang-hyeb(Sam) Lee, Ph.D. pursued a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Computer Science from the University of Otago. During this time, the start and end years are not provided. Subsequently, Lee completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, from 2011 to 2015.

To further enhance their knowledge and skills, Lee pursued a Master of Information and Data Science (MIDS) degree with a focus on Data Science from the UC Berkeley School of Information from 2019 to 2021.

Lee also obtained several additional certifications to supplement their education. These certifications include: Modern C++ development with bazel, googletest, and googlemock from Udemy in November 2021; AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate from Amazon Web Services (AWS) in November 2020; Flutter & Dart - The Complete from Udemy in October 2020; Learn BERT - the most powerful NLP algorithm by Google from Udemy in May 2020; Natural Language Processing in TensorFlow, Sequences, Time Series and Prediction, TensorFlow in Practice Specialization, Browser-based Models with TensorFlow.js, Machine Learning in JavaScript with TensorFlow.js, Version Control with Git, Convolutional Neural Networks in TensorFlow, Introduction to TensorFlow for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning, Deep Learning Specialization, Sequence Models, Structuring Machine Learning Projects, Convolutional Neural Networks, Introduction to Probability and Data, Improving Deep Neural Networks: Hyperparameter tuning, Regularization, and Optimization, and Neural Networks and Deep Learning, all from Coursera, with completion dates ranging from April 2019 to November 2021.

These educational experiences and certifications have equipped Sang-hyeb(Sam) Lee, Ph.D. with a strong foundation in Computer Science and Data Science, as well as specialized knowledge in various fields such as deep learning, convolutional neural networks, and natural language processing.
