Michael Kelly

Hydrodynamic and Mechanical Engineer at CalWave Power Technologies

Michael Kelly has a diverse work experience in various roles and industries. Michael started their career as a Library Assistant at Devereaux Library from September 2013 to May 2014. Michael then worked as a Specialty Sign Installer at Rosenbaum's Signs from May to August 2014, and later served as a Front Desk Attendant at Solace Yoga Studio from August 2014 to January 2016.

In 2015, Michael joined Caterpillar Inc. as a Test Engineer Intern for Global Engine Development, where they worked from May to August. In 2016, they had two internships in the renewable energy sector; one as a Mechanical Engineer Intern at CalWave Power Technologies from June to August, and the other as a Research Engineer Intern at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) from January to May. At NREL, they focused on investigating the effects of geometry control methods on absorber performance for the NREL oscillating surge wave energy converter.

Michael also worked as a Research Engineer Intern at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in 2017, where they performed hydrodynamic modeling and derived equations for the NREL converter. Later that year, they joined the University of California, Berkeley as a Graduate Student Researcher, focusing on numerical modeling, experimental testing, and development of geometry control strategies for wave energy converters. Michael held this position until May 2023.

During their time at UC Berkeley, Michael took on additional roles, including being a Capstone Advisor for Master of Engineering teams from August 2019 to May 2022. Michael also served as a Mentor for Undergraduate Research, guiding 12 undergraduate semester research projects from June 2019 to May 2022. Furthermore, Michael was a Graduate Student Instructor for a semester from January to May 2021.

In 2019, they became the Team Lead at SD CAL Desal, leading a team in the design, modeling, and machining of a wave-powered desalination system. Michael secured funding for this project and worked on proof-of-concept trials until May 2022.

Michael's most recent position is with CalWave Power Technologies Inc., where they began as a Hydrodynamic and Mechanical Engineer in January 2023. The duration of this role is ongoing and no end date has been provided.

Overall, Michael Kelly's work experience spans across engineering, research, mentoring, and leadership roles in both academia and industry, with a specific focus on renewable energy and wave energy conversion.

Michael Kelly's education history is as follows:

From 2017 to 2023, they attended the University of California, Berkeley, where they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mechanical Engineering/Ocean Engineering.

During the same period, from 2017 to 2019, they also earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in Mechanical Engineering/Ocean Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prior to their time at Berkeley, from 2013 to 2017, Michael attended South Dakota Mines, where they completed a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Mechanical Engineering.

In 2012, they briefly enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, studying Mechanical Engineering but did not obtain a degree from this institution.

Michael's secondary education took place at Stevens High School, where they graduated with a High School degree in 2012.

In addition to their formal education, Michael also obtained a certification in Project Management Simplified from LinkedIn in September 2019.
