James K. Sullivan

SVP & Chief Medical Officer, Chief of Psychiatry, Care New England at Butler Hospital

James K. Sullivan, MD, Ph.D., is the Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of Butler Hospital as well as the Chief of Psychiatry at Women & Infants Hospital. Previously serving as Deputy Medical Director for Clinical Services, Dr. Sullivan joined Butler in 2007 as Assistant Unit Chief on the Kent Unit.

A Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, Dr. Sullivan received his Ph.D. in biology from Wesleyan University and his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his internship in medicine at Hartford Hospital and his residency in psychiatry at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, where he was a chief resident.

Dr. Sullivan is a past recipient of the Prattle Excellence in Teaching Award from Brown University and the National Alliance on Mental Illness Exemplary Psychiatrist Award. A past president of Butler Hospital’s Medical Staff Association, Dr. Sullivan was awarded the Robert J. Westlake Award for Physician Excellence in 2013. Dr. Sullivan also received the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Exemplary Psychiatrist Award in 2017.
