Richard LaFontaine has a comprehensive work experience spanning several decades. Richard began their career in 1981 as a Volunteer in the Peace Corps in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, where they were involved in cooperative agricultural, small business, and construction projects. In 1987, they joined the Legal Aid Society as a Staff Attorney until 1992. Richard then moved on to the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, where they worked as a Staff Attorney from 1992 to 1996. Richard subsequently joined Brooklyn Defender Services as a Senior Trial Attorney and Director of Recruiting in 1996. In 2014, Richard started serving as an Adjunct Professor at SUNY Empire State College.

Richard LaFontaine completed their high school education at Bronx High School of Science and received their High School Diploma in an unspecified year. Richard then attended Cornell University from 1977 to 1981 and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Subsequently, Richard pursued their legal education at Boston University School of Law, where they completed their Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from 1984 to 1987, specializing in the field of Law.
