Rui Gomes has a strong background in marine renewable energy and engineering. Rui'smost recent role at Blue21 involves overseeing technical feasibility studies and engineering projects for floating structures. As a Team Leader / Senior Offshore Engineer, they lead a team of engineers in conducting studies on floating platforms, interconnections, mooring systems, and breakwaters. Rui also contributes to the development of in-house hydrostatic/hydrodynamic software.
Prior to Blue21, Rui worked at IDMEC, Instituto Superior Técnico as a Senior Researcher and Postdoctoral Researcher. In these roles, they focused on developing software and numerical models for the analysis of wave energy converters and their integration into breakwaters. Rui also conducted scale model testing and hydrodynamic optimization of floating wave energy converters. Rui's research work included projects such as WAVEBUOY and WETFEET, and they lectured courses on wave and tidal energy at Instituto Superior Técnico.
Additionally, Rui served as an Invited Assistant Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, where they taught courses on marine renewable energy technologies for the KIC InnoEnergy Master in Renewable Energy and the EUREC Master in Renewable Energy.
Rui's work experience also includes a PhD Candidate/Research Assistant position at Instituto Superior Técnico, where they focused on hydrodynamic optimization models and numerical simulations for wave energy converters. Rui conducted experimental testing and analysis on various aspects of wave energy conversion.
Earlier in their career, Rui worked as a Research Assistant at IDMEC, Instituto Superior Técnico, where they contributed to the research project on self-rectifying impulse turbines for wave energy conversion.
Overall, Rui Gomes has a diverse and extensive background in marine renewable energy research, engineering, and teaching.
Rui Gomes pursued their education at Instituto Superior Técnico. From 2001 to 2006, they obtained a Licentiateship in Mechanical Engineering. Following this, from 2006 to 2007, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) in Mechanical Engineering. Finally, from 2007 to 2013, Rui Gomes specialized in Sustainable Energy Systems with a focus on Marine Renewable Energy, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.
