Dr. Smith received his graduate degree from the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1996. He trained as a cancer biologist at the University of Virginia where he was an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Pathology as well as the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Smith’s research ranges from protein-protein interaction in mitogenic signaling pathways to systems biology as well as generation of nanomaterial imaging agents for cancer detection. He also has over a decade of experience as principle investigator in the industrial arena conceiving, obtaining external funding for and directing novel research in numerous disciplines.
