Nathan Porter, Ph.D. has a long history of experience in the field of microbial engineering. Nathan began their career in 2008 as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant at Brigham Young University. In 2010, they were a Research Intern at Idaho National Laboratory where they designed a new plasmid vector for an extremophilic bacterium. Nathan was a recipient of the Department Of Energy Summer Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI). In 2011, they became a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Michigan Health System where they studied the human gut symbiont Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron. Nathan competed consortia of isogenic strains in both in vitro and in vivo assays, generated a new library of bacterial strains, developed a novel, semi-high throughput method for identifying determinants of bacteriophage resistance in Bacteroides, collaborated on and published four peer-reviewed publications, and led and developed new lab direction in bacteriophage research. In 2013, they were a Research Intern at Alluvium Biosciences Inc. and a Graduate Student Instructor at the University of Michigan. From 2017 to 2018, they were a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan Medical School and Chalmers University of Technology. Currently, they are a Research Scientist in Microbial Engineering at Melt&Marble.
Nathan Porter obtained their Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Brigham Young University in 2011. Nathan then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology from the University of Michigan, where they also completed a Certificate in Cellular Biotechnology. Nathan graduated with their Ph.D. in 2017.
