Jaan Viru's work experience includes positions in various companies and industries. Jaan started as an attitude control and determination system hardware and software engineer at ESTCube-1 in 2009 and worked there until 2014. Jaan then joined TU Delft as an ADCS Engineer from 2014 to 2015. In 2015, they joined Krakul as the VP of Software and later became the Business Development Manager until 2022. From 2017 to 2019, they served as a Board Member at Edgeway Inc. In 2019, they became the CPO at Biig Technologies Inc. Currently, they are a Member of the Council at Estonian Defence Industry Association.

Jaan Viru completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Physics from the University of Tartu, where they studied from 2009 to 2013. Jaan then pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science from the same university, graduating in 2015.
