Erik Gatenholm

Co-founder at BICO

Erik Gatenholm has a solid background in the bioconvergence industry. Erik co-founded BICO in 2015 and currently holds the roles of President and CEO. BICO is a leading company in the field, focusing on reducing the organ and tissue shortage and accelerating drug development. They develop innovative technologies for 3D cell culture, high-throughput drug screening, and even printing human tissues and organs.

In addition to their work at BICO, Erik Gatenholm also serves as a Board of Advisors member for BMES at Virginia Tech, starting in 2020.

Prior to BICO, Erik Gatenholm founded and served as the CEO of BC Genesis, a biomedical device company specializing in the development of tissue reinforcement devices like surgical meshes. BC Genesis utilized a novel cellulose hydrogel material for its products and aimed to launch its first surgical mesh product, BioCelltrixTM in 2015.

Earlier in their career, Erik Gatenholm worked as the Director of Marketing for the HHGS, Student Association of the School of Business, Economics, and Law at the University of Gothenburg from 2015 to 2016.

Overall, Erik Gatenholm has a diverse range of experiences in the bioconvergence field, showcasing their entrepreneurial skills and expertise in bringing innovative solutions to the medical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

Erik Gatenholm pursued their undergraduate education at Virginia Tech from 2008 to 2012, where they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Management. In 2011, they also completed the Dale Carnegie Course: Skills for Success at Dale Carnegie. Later, from 2014 to 2016, Erik furthered their education at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg, earning a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Innovation & Industrial Management.
