Polly Thorsness has a strong background in the banking industry with over 42 years of experience. Polly worked at Bell State Bank & Trust from 2008 until their retirement in June 2023. During their time at Bell State Bank & Trust, they held various roles including Senior Vice President of Deposit Operations and Senior Vice President of Bank Operations. Prior to that, they worked at Bank of the West as a Regional Customer Service Manager from 2004 to 2008, and at Community First Technologies, Inc. as a Senior Vice President of Operations from 1998 to 2004.

Polly Thorsness obtained their Associate of Arts degree in Accounting from Valley City State University from 1979 to 1981. Polly later pursued higher education at Minnesota State University Moorhead from 1987 to 1998, where they earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. In May 2014, Polly also obtained a certification as a National Check Professional from the Electronic Check Clearing House Organization (ECCHO).
