Teresa Aguado

Aguado, Teresa, MSc, MSc, PhD, is a former member of the WHO, where she completed twenty four years of service in public health, in the area of immunization. She was the Coordinator of one of the teams in the Initiative for Vaccine Research (IVR) of the Department of Immunization, Vaccines and Biologicals (IVB).

A biologist and pharmacist, she conducted basic research on auto-immune diseases and immunological tolerance at the University of Geneva, Switzerland, the University of Washington in Seattle and the Research Institute of Scripps Clinic in San Diego, California for eleven years, following which she joined WHO. Her team was responsible for a large R&D portfolio of vaccines against a number of diseases and immunization technologies, for innovative approaches to develop, improve or use vaccines and for a major effort in translating results into setting up or revising global policy for specific vaccines. A number of key public /private partnerships (eg, the Meningitis Vaccine Project) were developed under her direct leadership and carried out by her team.

She also served as the Secretary for the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) R&D Task Force, was Senior Advisor to the Director of the immunization department, and participated in the setting up of Decade of Vaccines (DoV).

Teresa Aguado is at present an independent vaccines and immunization’ consultant and a Senior Advisor to the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal). Her major interest is to keep working on immunization beyond infancy as a life-course approach, addressing vaccination needs and opportunities for adolescents, pregnant women, young adults and elderly population.
