Dr. Jianlin Cao

Senior System Engineer at Ballard Motive Solutions

Dr. Jianlin Cao's work experience includes serving as a Senior System Engineer and Control Software Engineer at Ballard Motive Solutions since October 2021. In these roles, they capture software requirements from a model-based system engineering process and supports vehicle testing. Dr. Jianlin also designs software system architecture for fuel cell powered refuse collection vehicles.

Prior to their current position, Dr. Cao worked at the University of Strathclyde from October 2016 to September 2021. Here, they served as an Electro-Mechanical Engineer, developing a robot crawler for remote inspections and focusing on tasks such as pressure tank/vessel inspections. Dr. Jianlin also worked as a Research Assistant, where they contributed to various projects involving radar techniques, microwave phased array antenna design, and prototyping a new passive radar for drone detection and identification.

Dr. Cao also completed summer placements at Tianjin ACT Measurement & Control Technology Co., Ltd in 2013 and 2012.

Dr. Jianlin Cao began their education journey in 2006 at Tianjin No.43 High School. From 2009 to 2011, they attended North China Electric Power University (Baoding) where they pursued a degree in Electrical Engineering. In 2011, Dr. Cao transferred to the University of Strathclyde and earned their Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering between 2011 and 2013.

Continuing their education at the University of Strathclyde, Dr. Cao pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, as well as Electrical and Electronics Engineering from 2013 to 2016. During this time, they also participated as a Visiting Research Student at the University of Glasgow where they specialized in the navigation and control of smart dust swarms from 2014 to 2016.

In 2015, Dr. Cao expanded their knowledge by attending Fab Academy, where they engaged in digital fabrication.

Additionally, Dr. Cao obtained several certifications in amateur radio licensing from Ofcom, including the Amateur Full Radio Licence in September 2019, the Amateur Intermediate Radio Licence in August 2019, and the Amateur Foundation Radio Licence in June 2019.
