Atul Thakkar pursued their education starting from New Era School, Bombay, where they completed their primary and secondary education from 1958 to 1964. Atul then attended St. Xavier's College in 1964 and studied science. Following this, Atul Thakkar joined the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay in 1965 and pursued a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, which they successfully completed in 1970. In 1970, they furthered their education at the Illinois Institute of Technology and completed a Master's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 1971. Continuing their academic journey, Atul Thakkar enrolled at Loyola University Chicago in 1972, where they obtained a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree with a specialization in Operations Research in 1974.
