Uri Friedman is the managing editor at the Atlantic Council, where he oversees the Council’s editorial work and leads its editorial strategy and innovations. He is also a contributing writer at The Atlantic magazine, where he writes a regular column on international affairs. A veteran journalist, Friedman was previously a senior staff writer at The Atlantic covering national security and global affairs and the editor of The Atlantic’s Global section. Before that, he served as the deputy managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine.
Friedman’s reporting, which has taken him around the world, has covered a range of foreign-affairs issues including the North Korean nuclear challenge, US relations with China, the evolving international system, the geopolitical consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, global democratic trends, and the intersection of American politics and US foreign policy. His work and perspective have been extensively featured on national and international media outlets, including NPR, CNN, MSNBC, CBS News, PBS, and the BBC.
A native of Philadelphia, Friedman graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in European history.
