Laura Z. Holland, PhD has a diverse work experience in the field of marine microbiology and bioinformatics. Laura Z. started their career as a Summer Research Assistant at Oregon State University in 2011, where they conducted research on marine ecosystems. In 2012, they worked as a Summer Research Assistant at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, specializing in the identification and study of microbes from deep-sea environments.
From 2009 to 2013, Laura worked as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, gaining experience in various research projects. During this time, they also worked as a Summer Research Assistant at Carnegie Mellon University, primarily focusing on the cultivation and identification of pressure-loving marine actinomycetes.
Laura then joined the University of Rhode Island in 2013 as a Graduate Research Assistant, where they conducted research on Antarctic marine microbes. Their work involved generating, analyzing, and interpreting large-scale sequencing data from non-model species and diverse microbial communities. In addition to their research responsibilities, they also mentored and instructed students, disseminated research findings, and collaborated with other researchers.
Starting in 2018, Laura took on the role of Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Rhode Island. Laura Z. taught undergraduate Biology 101 lab courses, delivering lectures, organizing and conducting lab experiments, and providing guidance to students. Laura Z. held this position for 9 semesters, until 2020.
In 2020, Laura joined the URI Graduate School of Oceanography as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Laura Z. performed metatranscriptome analyses on marine microbial eukaryote communities using advanced sequencing technologies. Laura Z. also contributed to planning fieldwork and experimental strategies for a NASA remote sensing oceanographic research cruise.
Currently, Laura works as a Bioinformatics Scientist I at ArkeaBio, a position they started in 2023.
Laura Z. Holland, PhD pursued their education in the field of Biological Sciences. Laura Z. completed their Bachelor's degree at Carnegie Mellon University, before attending the University of Rhode Island. There, they obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biological and Environmental Sciences. Their educational journey spanned from an unspecified time before 2013 until 2020.
