Doug Pitera has over 20 years of experience in the biotechnology industry. From 2000 to 2006, they worked at Tate & Lyle as a Fermentation Engineering Intern, at the University of California - Berkeley Department of Chemical Engineering as a Graduate Student Researcher, and at Amyris as a Scientist - Metabolic Engineering, Senior Process Scientist / Associate Director of Process Development, Director Process Development, and Senior Director of Process Technology. During their time at Amyris, Doug led multidisciplinary teams to develop production processes and coordinate manufacturing of new bio-products, as well as work with customers to complete product sales. Doug also mentored Process Technology Leads to improve the consistency of new product process development approach and leadership. Additionally, Doug moved to Brazil for 1.5 years to support commissioning, start-up, and process stabilization of Amyris' first fully owned and operated manufacturing plant. Doug also engineered recombinant bacteria for the increased production of the anti-malaria drug precursor, artemisinic acid. Lastly, at Tate & Lyle, they conducted laboratory and pilot plant scale fermentations for production of 1,3-Propanediol (polymer precursor) from engineered E. Coli.
Doug Pitera completed their Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2000, having started in 1996. Doug then went on to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, which they completed in 2006.
