Shelly Hsiao-Ying Cheng

Senior Scientist, Protein Engineering at Allozymes

Shelly Hsiao-Ying Cheng has a diverse and extensive work experience. Shelly Hsiao-Ying began their career as an Undergraduate Researcher at UC Berkeley in September 2009, where they characterized transcription activity and the orthogonality of promoter-activator pairs. Shelly Hsiao-Ying then worked as a Research Assistant at Academia Sinica from April 2011 to April 2012, where they characterized the baculovirus-mediated protein expression system in mammalian cells and pioneered high-throughput microscopy protocols. During their time at Academia Sinica, they won first place in an oral presentation contest.

In November 2012, Shelly joined Rice University as a Graduate Researcher, where they established an interdisciplinary thesis project that bridged synthetic biology and environmental sciences. Collaborating with a team, they secured $2M in funding, published three papers, and obtained a US patent.

After completing their doctoral studies, Shelly joined Mascoma LLC in April 2018 as a Research Scientist. Shelly Hsiao-Ying played a crucial role in driving project ideas forward and applying protein engineering and strain engineering methodologies to develop whole-cell and enzyme products for animal nutrition and food processing. In addition, they submitted R&D reports for company-wide distribution.

Shelly's next role was at Veranome Biosystems LLC, where they worked as a Scientist from March 2020 to January 2023. Their responsibilities included improving the fluorescence-based spatial transcriptomic workflow, establishing sequencing workflows for evaluating oligo pool libraries, and collaborating with engineers and software developers on next-generation instrument design.

Recently, Shelly joined Allozymes in April 2023 as a Protein Engineer. Further information about their role and accomplishments in this position is not provided in the given data.

Shelly Hsiao-Ying Cheng received their Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biochemical Science and Technology from National Taiwan University in the years 2006 to 2010. In 2009 to 2010, they participated in a Study Abroad Program at the University of California, Berkeley, focusing on Molecular and Cell Biology. Shelly Hsiao-Ying later pursued a higher degree, earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Bioengineering from Rice University from 2012 to 2017.

Additionally, Shelly Hsiao-Ying Cheng has obtained certifications in Accounting Foundations and Business Analysis Foundations from LinkedIn in October 2020.
