Ferrin Wheeler is an ABMGG board-certified cytogeneticist and molecular geneticist with more than 11 years experience working as a laboratory director in Clinical Cytogenetics, Molecular Diagnostics and Genomics. She earned her PhD at Washington University in St. Louis and performed post-doctoral research fellowships at Duke University School of Medicine followed by clinical fellowships at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
Ferrin Wheeler is currently the Senior Clinical Genomics Director at Allele Diagnostics. She is responsible for clinical test validation, and reporting of test results. In addition to her functions within the clinical laboratory, Dr. Wheeler also oversees the continuing education program.
Dr. Wheeler started her career in Clinical Diagnostics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. During her time at Vanderbilt, she was responsible for the oversight of multiple test development and validation projects including chromosome analysis, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), cytogenomic microarray assays. As Medical Director of Cytogenetics, she acquired extensive experience in microarray technology, data review and reporting. She also had roles in the Molecular Diagnostics and Clinical Genomics Laboratories in clinical test validation and signout for oncology and constitutional disorders, including single gene/multi-gene panel assays and whole exome sequencing.
Dr. Wheeler earned her PhD in Molecular Genetics at Washington University in St. Louis and performed post-doctoral research in genetic modifiers of heart failure at Duke University. She then completed ABMGG training fellowships at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She has certification in Clinical Cytogenetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG), is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG), and a member of the American Cytogenetics Conference (ACC).
Dr. Wheeler has co-authored more than 20 peer-reviewed publications, and has presented work at national conferences, including the annual American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics meeting and the American Cytogenetics Conference. She has been involved in teaching and training of undergraduates, medical students, graduate students, residents and ABMGG fellows and maintains an adjunct faculty position in the Masters of Genetic Counseling Program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
