Dave Powell has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Dave began their career in the United States Air Force in 1975, where they served as a Fighter Pilot, Instructor, and Flight Examiner until 1989. Following their time in the military, Powell joined United Airlines in 1986 and worked there as a Captain and Chief Pilot until 2003. In 2003, Powell joined Western Michigan University as the Dean of the College of Aviation, a position they held until 2021 when they became the Dean Emeritus. In 2022, Powell transitioned to AIRO (The AIRO Group) as the Senior Vice President and General Manager.

Dave Powell attended Arizona State University from 1970 to 1975 and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Geography/Urban Planning.
