Stephen plays an integral role in developing AES’ strategic plans that have simplified the equity story and have boosted the company to be ranked among the top renewable developers in the world. He is a strategic and financial advisor to the AES board and contributes to a broad range of corporate governance activities, including mergers and acquisitions, maintaining a risk management framework, investing in new technologies and communicating with investors.
Prior to his current role, Stephen served as the Vice President for Corporate Strategy and Financial Planning, leading the strategic scenario activities, including ensuring the company’s resiliency during the pandemic, guiding the capital allocation decisions to accelerate the future of energy and managing the budgeting and forecasting process. He rejoined AES in 2020 after serving as the founding CEO of Fluence (NASDAQ: FLNC). Under Stephen's leadership, AES successfully merged the energy storage business with Siemens to form Fluence. He led the company for its first two and a half years, helping to position it into the global market leader and publicly traded company it is today with nearly 6 GW of storage and optimized bidding assets in operation or contracted in 29 markets.
He previously served as the Chief of Staff to the AES CEO and the Director of Finance for AES’ wind generation business.
Before joining AES, Stephen was an economic and litigation consultant at Charles River Associates, worked in business development and strategic planning at AOL Mobile and conducted business analysis at MCI Communications.
Stephen received a bachelor's degree in commerce and finance from the University of Virginia and a master of business administration degree from the University of California at Berkeley.
