Joseph Schmalz is a Computational Biologist II at Adaptive Biotechnologies Corp. since November 2021. Previous experience includes serving as a Graduate Research Assistant at the University of Idaho from August 2017 to August 2021, where Joseph developed a time-series model of dopaminergic modulation and a novel stimulation strategy applicable to epilepsy and Parkinson's disease, along with modeling changes in Basal Ganglia dynamics. Joseph has published nine journal articles and made conference presentations. Earlier roles at the University of Idaho included Research Assistant from October 2011 to May 2017, focusing on synthesizing contrast agents and purifying compounds, and a Research Assistant role at Gilead Sciences in 2014, contributing to small-molecule drug synthesis for heart disease. Joseph holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering, along with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Idaho.
