Joanne Kobuthi Kuria has a diverse work experience in various organizations and roles. Joanne Kobuthi is currently serving as the Manager of Membership & Constituency Engagement at the Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) since June 2021. In 2019, they worked as the Advocacy Director for #Better4Kenya at WRTHY, where they rallied and unified a diverse collective of Kenyan influencers and NGOs around the concept of gender equality. Joanne also served as a Board Member at Freely in Hope, an NGO in Kenya and Zambia that aims to end sexual violence, where they provided strategic advice on communication, programmatic execution, and policy.
Previously, Joanne held positions at Amnesty International Kenya, where they served as the Communications & Membership Manager, leading a dynamic team and conceptualizing campaigns to promote human rights. Joanne Kobuthi also worked as a Policy Analyst at Amnesty International Kenya during the same period. Joanne founded Double X Agenda in 2018 and served as a Content Creator. Joanne Kobuthi worked as a Researcher (Consultancy) at BBC for a short period, and as a Media Researcher & Legal Correspondent (Consultancy) at Royal Media Services Limited.
Joanne's experience also includes working as the Head of Policy & Advocacy at the Local Development Research Institute, where they conducted policy research on agriculture and its correlation with other disciplines. Joanne Kobuthi worked as a Manager of Research and Content Creation (Consultancy) at DataScience Limited, where they curated and created content, conducted research, and supported tech teams. Additionally, Joanne worked as a Policy Research Consultant at TradeMark East Africa, focusing on policy gaps in East African regional integration and participating in advocacy forums.
Joanne Kobuthi Kuria has a diverse educational background. Joanne Kobuthi attended the Kenya School of Law from 2009 to 2010, where they obtained a Post Graduate diploma in law, specifically focused on admission to the bar of Advocates. Following this, they pursued a Masters of Business Administration degree with a specialization in Strategic Management at the University of Nairobi from 2011 to 2015. Wanting to further their knowledge in the field of public policy, Joanne enrolled at Strathmore University from 2020 to 2022, where they completed their Master of Public Policy Management degree with a concentration in Public Policy Analysis. In 2022, they also attended the Digital Frontiers Institute, studying Gender Studies.
