Dr Fungai Sexton Makoni has a diverse range of work experience in the field of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). Dr Fungai Sexton currently serves as the Senior Director of WASH Global Operations at World Vision, where they are responsible for providing strategic leadership and guidance for WASH programming. Dr Fungai Sexton also plays a key role in resource development, engaging with external stakeholders, and promoting evidence-based learning.
Prior to their current role, Dr Makoni held various positions at SNV Netherlands Development Organisation, including Country Director and Acting Country Director/WASH Sector Leader. In these roles, they were involved in steering country positioning, translating sector strategies, and managing the country budget. Dr Fungai Sexton also focused on business development, maintaining relationships with stakeholders, knowledge exchange, and planning and implementing public-private partnerships.
Before working at SNV, Dr Makoni served as the Programmes Manager at Action Contre la Faim (ACF), where they established and led all aspects of the WASH department. Dr Fungai Sexton provided technical guidance, carried out emergency needs assessments, and trained water supply operatives and communities.
Dr Makoni started their career as a Research Officer at the IWSD, where they managed research implementation and special projects. Dr Fungai Sexton also worked as a Medical Research Officer at the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare: Blair Research Institute.
Overall, Dr Fungai Sexton Makoni has a wealth of experience in WASH programming, strategic leadership, resource development, external engagement, evidence-based learning, and research implementation.
Dr Fungai Sexton Makoni received a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Zimbabwe in 1995. Dr Fungai Sexton then pursued Advanced level studies in Maths, Biology, and Chemistry at St. Augustines High Penhalonga, Mutare, Zimbabwe from 1987 to 1992. Dr Makoni obtained a Master's Degree in Public Health from the University of the Free State, South Africa (formerly University of the North) between 2000 and 2002. Dr Fungai Sexton furthered their education by completing a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Public Health and wastewater management at the University of the Free State from 2005 to 2014. Additionally, Dr Makoni has obtained certifications in Training Course for ISO 30500 and ISO 24521: International Non-sewered Sanitation Standards from the American National Standards Institute in 2020, as well as Professional Drilling Management from Cap-Net UNDP.
