Chris Freer became Vice President for Advancement in 2018, a position he was named to after serving as Vice President and Dean for Student Life since 2010. In 2012, he was appointed Principal of the Upper School while continuing his service as Vice President and Dean for Student Life. Dr. Freer came to Woodward in 1994 to teach U.S. government and economics including a senior elective entitled 'The American Presidency.'
Dr. Freer has been deeply involved in the life of the Academy from the beginning of his career at Woodward, coaching at the varsity level for football, wrestling, and track-and-field. He served as head coach for track and field. Beginning in 1998, Dr. Freer was appointed Dean of Student Life in the Upper School, adding the position of Upper School Assistant Principal in 2007. He earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Davidson College, a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in educational policy studies from Georgia State University.
A 2014 graduate of Leadership Atlanta, Dr. Freer also successfully completed the National Association of Independent Schools Aspiring Heads Fellowship in 2011 and the Harvard Graduate School of Education Leadership Institute in 2016. A member of the Atlanta Airport Rotary Club, he has served on numerous boards, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Atlanta, Steer Smart, and Habitat for Humanity. He is married to Amanda Lesesne Freer and has three sons--two who are students at Woodward and one graduated of the Class of 2019.
