Matthew Akre's work experience begins in 2011 when they worked as a Secondary English Teacher for Teach For America and Hartford Public Schools, where they taught 9th and 10th grade English classes and revised the curriculum to align with the Common Core State Standards. Matthew also organized and supervised a student-focused slam poetry club.
In 2014, Akre worked as a Product Management Analyst for EBSCO Information Services, supporting the management team in developing and marketing literary research databases for high schools and public libraries. Matthew conducted competitive research and developed a topic list for the creation of proprietary content.
Akre then moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Office of Undergraduate Admissions in 2015 as a Graduate Intern.
In 2016, Akre joined Harvard University as an Assistant Director of Financial Aid for Student Employment and Admissions Officer. Concurrently, they also worked as a Research Assistant for the School Leadership Program at Harvard Graduate School of Education.
From 2019 to 2021, Akre worked at Yale University, first as an Assistant Director of Student Financial Services and then as a Senior Assistant Director of Admissions & Financial Aid.
Currently, Akre holds the position of Associate Director of Financial Aid at Wesleyan University, starting in January 2022.
Matthew Akre holds a Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree in Higher Education/Higher Education Administration from Harvard Graduate School of Education (2015-2016) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English Language and Literature from the College of the Holy Cross (2007-2011). Matthew attended Peabody Veterans Memorial High School from 2004-2007. Matthew also has additional certifications in areas such as Excel, Access, and programming.
