Dr. Betts is a current member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Canada, along with holding the position of Associate Professor in the Faculty of Business Administration at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton. He is accomplished in the field of accounting and finance, with a mix of academic and public and private-sector experience. He is an expert in accounting regulations, and has extensive experience in audits, risk management, governance and oversight. He was a member of the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly from 1993 to 2003 and held three different cabinet posts, including Minister of Finance from 1999 to 2001. Prior to entering politics, Dr. Betts was Assistant Dean of the MBA Programme and an Associate Professor at the University of New Brunswick as well as a partner in the accounting firm Shannon, Betts & Buffett.
Dr. Betts sits on the Boards of Directors of Tembec Inc., New Brunswick Power Corporation, several mining and mineral exploration companies, and the University of New Brunswick Pension Plan for Academic Employees. Dr. Betts received a Ph.D in Management with a concentration in accounting and finance from Queen’s University School of Business in 1992 and a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Brunswick in 1978. He also holds a Fellow Chartered Accountant designation.
