Anne Kinney

Chief Scientist at W. M. Keck Observatory

Anne Kinney is an accomplished astrophysicist currently serving as Chief Scientist at the W. M. Keck Observatory since August 2015. In this role, Anne collaborates with prestigious institutions including Caltech, UC, UH, NSF, Yale, and ANU to enhance nighttime observations and achieve significant scientific outcomes. Prior to this, Anne held the position of Division Director for the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center from 2008 to July 2015, leading a diverse team of experts in planetary and Earth sciences. Anne also served as Division Director for the Universe Division at NASA from October 1999 to February 2006, managing several high-profile astrophysics missions including the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. Earlier in Anne's career, from May 1985 to September 1999, Anne was a FOS Instrument Scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, focusing on research related to active galactic nuclei. Anne earned a PhD in Physics and Astronomy from New York University between 1979 and 1984.
