Derek Eilers has a wide range of work experience in engineering and design roles. Derek currently holds a position as a Mechanical Engineer at Virtual Incision, starting in 2022. Prior to this, Derek worked at Montview Biomedical Design, Inc. for over a decade, where they served as a Principal Engineer. In this role, they collaborated with clinical staff to address clinical needs and developed innovative biomedical products. Derek engaged in a variety of tasks, including surgery observation, conceptual design, detailed design, prototyping, and testing. Derek also worked with local machine and rapid prototyping shops to create working prototypes using various materials.
Before joining Montview Biomedical Design, Inc., Derek worked at CONMED Corporation as a Sr. Mechanical Engineer from 2018 to 2023. Additionally, they worked at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus as a Researcher from 2011 to 2013, where they collaborated with a cardiac surgeon and perfusionist to design and develop a pump to minimize prime volume in a perfusion circuit. Derek also explored the feasibility of replacing traditional cardiac valve sutures with Nitinol clips.
Earlier in their career, Derek held positions at Nautilus Inc. as a Research and Development Engineer/Engineering Manager from 2005 to 2009. Prior to that, they worked at Roush Industries as a Test Engineer from 2002 to 2005, and at Honeywell as a Project Engineer from 2000 to 2002.
Derek Eilers obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University, where they attended from 1993 to 1996. Derek later pursued a Master's Degree in Bioengineering at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, completing their studies from 2010 to 2012.
