Julio Sánchez y Tépoz

Mr. Julio Sánchez y Tépoz has dedicated his professional career to regulatory affairs from the legal, economic and scientific perspective, focusing specifically on ensuring quality and protecting public health. After earning a law degree from Escuela Libre de Derecho in Puebla, Mr. Sánchez y Tépoz began a 20+ year career helping to improve health quality through his work in regulatory agencies in the Mexican government.

Mr. Sánchez y Tépoz held multiple leadership positions with COFEPRIS, a regulatory body under the Mexican Secretariat of Health responsible for regulating food safety, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and other health-related areas. During his time in COFEPRIS, he coordinated the Mexican Pharmacopeia, as it is established in national regulation COFEPRIS’ authority to propose guidelines for the expansion and periodic update of the Mexican Pharmacopeia. His regulatory knowledge and deep understanding of the value of pharmacopeial standards will make him an asset as a Trustee at Large on the USP Board of Trustees for the 2020-2025 cycle.

As the former Commissioner of COFEPRIS, Mr. Sánchez y Tépoz has a long-established relationship with USP. He participated in USP’s Latin American Regional meeting and was a noted speaker at USP’s launch of the “Medicines We Can Trust” coalition, of which COFEPRIS is a member. When updating the Mexican Pharmacopeia, Mr. Sánchez y Tépoz collaborated with USP and other pharmacopeias to help adapt and adopt standards using international best practices.

Mr. Sánchez y Tépoz currently leads the international nonprofit academic organization, ALó ProScience, a Latin American association of regulatory affairs professionals focused on promoting good regulatory practices and regulatory policy in the region while training and educating regulatory professionals. He also teaches health protection law at the Mexican Autonomous University and gives regulatory advice to the private and public sectors on the Mexican and Latin American sanitary and health landscape.
