Lee joined Birmingham as Registrar and Secretary in October 2008 and has over 30 years' experience of management in Higher Education. After obtaining a BA degree followed by postgraduate research in Medieval History at the University of Manchester, he held a range of management posts at the University of Warwick from 1990–2003. These included Director of Research and Development Services (1997–99) and Academic Registrar (1999-2003). He then moved to the University of Durham as Registrar and Secretary, where he was from 2003-2008.
Lee has extensive experience in HE, with 15 years on the Executive Committee of the UK Association of Heads of University Administration, which he Chaired from 2017-2020, and on national groups and task forces. He was a founding governor of the University of Birmingham School and has served as director of a number of University companies. He is a regular contributor to national and international conferences, reviews and development programmes, and serves as external adviser on appointments at other universities.
