Makere Stewart-Harawira

I-steam Indigenous Environmental Education Program Project Team Lead

Makere Stewart-Harawira has extensive work experience in academia and research. Makere began their career in 1998 at Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi, where they served as a Senior Lecturer and Acting Head of Post-Graduate Studies until 2003. In 2004, they joined The University of Auckland as a Research Fellow. Later that year, they also started working at the University of Alberta as an Associate Professor, a role they held until 2015. During their time at the University of Alberta, they took on various roles, including Professor of Indigenous, Environmental and Global Studies in the Faculty of Education and Project Team Lead for the I-Steam Indigenous Environmental Education program. In 2009, Makere became an Expert Member of the Commission for Environmental, Economic and Social Policy at the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). In 2014, they became the Principal Investigator for the Intersections of Sustainability Interdisciplinary Research Network at the University of Alberta, focusing on critical issues such as climate change, water governance, energy, and community futures. From 2016 to 2020, they served as the Director of the Traditional Medicine Council at the Integrative Health Network at the University of Alberta.

Makere Stewart-Harawira holds a PhD in Education from The University of Auckland.
