Leah Schamschurin

Council Member at University of Adelaide

Leah Schamschurin has completed a Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) degree and is currently studying a Bachelor of Environmental Policy and Management. While at the University of Adelaide, she has immersed herself in the university community through club engagement, student representation and volunteering at campus events. Leah is currently a member of the University of Adelaide Women’s Collective, Adelaide University Pro Choice Club, Adelaide University Debating Society and Adelaide University Geography and Development Society, and has been involved in the Politics and International Relations Association. In 2020, she served as the Welfare Officer on the Student Representative Council where she developed a strong passion to advocate for student interests and an inclusive campus culture. Through these experiences, as well as personal achievements, Leah has been selected as a New Colombo Plan Scholar for 2021. She looks forward to living and studying in Fiji in an attempt to learn more about environmental management and international relations, as well as establishing strong connections in the Indo-Pacific region.

Alongside her involvement in the university community, Leah is a volunteer speaker with Beyond Blue. At community events, she shares her experiences with mental health illnesses and an eating disorder in an attempt to reduce the stigma that still surrounds both. Leah is also a sports instructor with Ready Steady Go Kids, where she has come to learn new communication and creative thinking skills. In this position, she is responsible for teaching children aged from eighteen months to six years old a variety of different sports, from AFL to hockey, and always finds herself involved in amusing conversations with rather opinionated toddlers.

Leah plans on using her knowledge, passions and skills in order to pursue environmental justice and social equality over the course of her life, and hopes to never stop meeting interesting people.
