Carla Freeman

Senior Expert, China at United States Institute of Peace

Carla Freeman is a Senior Expert on China at the United States Institute of Peace, a position held since August 2021. Previously, Freeman served as the Director of the Foreign Policy Institute and as an Associate Research Professor in China Studies at Johns Hopkins University SAIS from December 2013 to August 2021. Additional roles include Chair of US-China Relations at the Library of Congress Kluge Center in 2020, Visiting Scholar at Harvard University Fairbank Center, and interim American Co-Director at The Hopkins-Nanjing Center. Freeman's earlier career includes work as a Program Officer at The Johnson Foundation from 1993 to 1997. Academic credentials consist of a PhD in International Relations with a focus on China, an MA in International Economics and Asian Studies, a Political Science certificate from Sciences Po, and a BA in History and Southeast Asia Studies from Yale University.
