Herwig Leirs is an accomplished academic and leader currently serving as Rector-elect, Professor, and Chairman of the Board of Governors at the University of Antwerp, where engagement began in January 1999. Leirs holds the position of Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors at the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp since October 2018 and has been Chairman of the Board at APOPO since September 2018. In addition, Leirs leads as Chairman of the Board at KMDA vzw since April 2019. Previously, Leirs was Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at Universiteit Antwerpen from October 2009 to September 2015 and held various roles at the Danish Pest Infestation Laboratory, including senior researcher and Head of the Mammal Department. Educational credentials include a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biology from the University of Antwerp, obtained between 1985 and 1992.
