Kimberly Vanous

Senior Scientist WGS at Trace Genomics

Kimberly Vanous has a diverse work experience in various fields. Kimberly is currently working as a Senior Scientist WGS at Trace Genomics, where they are responsible for optimizing the whole genomic sequencing workflow. Prior to this, they served as the Lead for Whole Genome Sequencing and a Senior Research Associate at Trace Genomics, where they conducted research to improve the efficiency and automation of genomic sequencing processes.

Before their time at Trace Genomics, Kimberly founded and directed a non-profit organization called Big and Small Tortoise Rescue and Sanctuary. In this role, they handled all aspects of the organization, including tax-exemption maintenance, fundraising operations, financial management, and grant submissions.

Kimberly also gained research experience as an Assistant Scientist at Iowa State University, where they worked on genetic research projects. Kimberly previously worked at Land O'Lakes, Inc. as a Research Assistant, and at Complex Computation LLC as a Senior Bioinformaticist, where they developed bioinformatic applications and gained knowledge in data mining and software solutions.

In addition to their professional experience, Kimberly earned a PhD in Genetics from Iowa State University, where they conducted research on doubled haploid technology in maize and cloning for plant transformation. Kimberly also holds a Graduate Research Fellowship in Soil and Environmental Science and served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant for an introductory soils course at Iowa State University.

Kimberly began their career as an Undergraduate Research Aide at the USDA, where they gained experience in data collection, laboratory work, and field plot maintenance.

Kimberly Vanous pursued their education at Iowa State University, where they obtained a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy and Crop Science as well as a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. Kimberly continued their studies at Iowa State University and earned a Master's degree in Soil Science and Environmental Science. Following this, they pursued a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD in Interdepartmental Genetics and Genomics, again at Iowa State University. Kimberly also holds a certification called "From Lab to Leadership" obtained from The Leadership Edge in April 2022.
