Seth McNew has a strong legal background, with their most recent position being Lead Counsel at TotalEnergies starting in 2023. Prior to that, they worked at ExxonMobil as a Supervising Counsel from February 2022 to December 2022, and as a Counsel from May 2009 to January 2022. Before joining ExxonMobil, they were an Attorney at Winstead PC from September 2008 to May 2009.

Seth McNew earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Spanish from Vanderbilt University in 2004. Seth then completed their Doctor of Law (JD) degree at SMU Dedman School of Law from 2005 to 2008.
