Board Member at Tilburg University

M.R. Leijten is a Board Member at Tilburg University. Prior to their current position, they worked at the German Israeli Foundation for Scientific Research & Development (GIF), FAU Erlangen-NĂĽrnberg, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Neev - Foundation for Legal Aid, Justice Adda, and Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS).

During their time at IIHS, Leijten served as Senior Associate-Legal & Regulation. In this role, they provided legal and regulatory support on key areas pertaining to urbanisation and human settlements. As part of the Centre for Land Governance, they conducted research on participatory forest management in Himachal Pradesh, provided legal opinions on amendments in the Chandigarh Master Plan, and taught a module on “Judges as Urban Planners” as IIHS faculty during the IIHS Urban Fellows Programme (UFP 18-19). As part of work in the Academics and Research Unit, they provided legal opinions on slum titling, Nauroji Nagar redevelopment case, law related to the unorganized sector amongst others. M.R. also conducted primary level qualitative surveys in Jaipur on a WHO maternity entitlements study and conducted Focus Group Discussions with domestic workers in Jaipur for a study on informal work. Additionally, they organized consultations with RERA chairpersons from various states for ways to streamline practices of local RERAs.

Leijten’s work experience covers a wide range of topics related to law, regulation, and urbanisation. Her experience in both research and teaching positions makes their well-suited for their current role as Board Member at Tilburg University.

M.R. Leijten received a Doctor of Philosophy in Law from FAU Erlangen-NĂĽrnberg, a Master of Laws in International Law from Georgetown University Law Center, and a Bachelor of Laws from Delhi University. M.R. also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Government from Delhi University. M.R. Leijten is a registered advocate with the Bar Council of India and has a certification from the BCI.
